Mother, Daughter Share Learning Experience at South Carolina Center

06/01/2000

SPARTANBURG, SC -- Seventh grade is the average education level for adults living at Spartanburg Terrace Apartments, and although the reading level varies, it is still between fourth and eighth grade at this 150-apartment HUD community.
Ten-year-old Keisha Dunlap’s goal was to earn grades that would place her on the Fifth Grade Honor Roll. With C and D grades and a mother who could not read, this was not going to be easy.

But with perseverance and the availability of the Spartanburg Terrace Resource Center’s Afterschool Program, Keisha achieved her dream. With faithful attendance at the center’s homework club and help from dedicated staff, Keisha mastered reading and math skills, turning C and D grades into As and Bs. Now, this academic achiever talks about college and becoming a nurse.

An important part of Keisha’s success, said Property Manager Vernon Beatty, was the design of a three-year-old Parenting Program. According to Beatty, parenting activities gave Barbara Dunlap, Keisha’s mother, an opportunity to volunteer, participate in her daughter’s education and learn how to read, too. “She also became more involved in her children’s education,” Beatty said.

“We work with parents in the Parenting Program in the hope they will become a volunteer and work with their children,” Beatty said. “Keisha is an example that the program is working.”
