| Funding Opportunity: Dominion Foundation |

Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is the Dominion Foundation.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy and serves retail energy customers in 12 states. It also operates the nation's largest natural gas storage facility. Dominion’s corporate headquarters are in Richmond, Virginia.
Program Areas: The Dominion Foundation supports a wide range of charitable programs. The foundation believes that charitable giving and campaigns that benefit nonprofit organizations are integral to Dominion’s social responsibility. Therefore, the Dominion Foundation contributes more than $20 million annually to charities in the states where it operates or where it has significant facilities or business interests. These states include Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Dominion’s charitable contributions are primarily awarded in the following categories:
- Civic and community development.
- Arts and culture.
- Education.
- Environment.
- Health and human services.
Targeted Area: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Midwest.
Eligibility: Foundation support is available to:
- Not-for-profit, Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified 501 (c)(3) organizations.
- Organizations within geographic areas where Dominion provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests.
- Organizations that focus on education, environment, culture and the arts, civic and community development, and health and human services.
Foundation grant support is not available to:
- Individuals.
- Religious programs of churches or other sectarian organizations.
- Fraternal, political, advocacy, or labor organizations.
- Operating funds of individual United Way agencies, which already benefit from Dominion's corporate donations to United Way.
- Projects or organizations that are not located within geographic areas where Dominion provides electricity or natural gas service or has significant facilities or business interests.
- Fundraising events (dinners, lunches, etc.).
- Golf tournaments or other sporting events.
- Organizations without 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status.
- Organizations that limit membership and services based on race, religion, color, creed, sex, age, or national origin.
- Advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes.
- Travel-related events, including student trips or tours.
- Memorial campaigns.
Award Amount: Award amounts range from $1,000 to $15,000.
Application Process: Before applying for a grant or contribution, organizations should review the Grant Guidelines and Restrictions, as well as Frequently Asked Questions. If an organization meets the eligibility requirements, the next step is to complete the eligibility quiz.
Upon successfully passing the eligibility quiz, organizations will receive a password that provides access to the foundation’s online application. Corporate philanthropy staff members will review applications submitted for their areas and respond in a timely manner.
Documents that require electronic upload for online application processing include:
- Latest IRS determination letter indicating 501 (c)(3) status.
- Current board members and affiliations.
- Most recent audited financial statement.
- List of other sources of financial support (both committed and pending).
