Weekly Funding Opportunity: JCPenney

05/10/2001

Each week, Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is the J.C. Penney Company, Inc., at www.jcpenney.net/company/commrel/index.htm. The organization has two funding opportunities that could be of interest to Neighborhood Networks centers.
JCPenney Grants

JCPenney makes grants to 501(c)(3) organizations with a proven record of success. Although it makes grants outside its primary areas of interest, JCPenney primarily funds programs and services in the areas of:
  • Health and welfare
  • Education
  • Civic betterment
  • Arts and culture

Send inquiries to:

The JCPenney Afterschool Initiative

JCPenney is particularly interested in funding curriculum-based after-school care. Its $30 million JCPenney Afterschool Initiative can help eligible Neighborhood Networks centers provide:
  • Programs in which help children reach their full learning potential
  • Homework and tutoring programs with a focus on teenagers fulfilling their potential
  • Additional staff for after-school programs
  • Transportation so that children can enroll in after-school programs

Proposals should include a letter of inquiry describing the organization and the specific request, including expected outcomes and program milestones. JCPenney will request eligible applicants to provide additional information. Applicants should provide as much lead time as possible between the time of the request and the actual need for funding. JCPenney’s fiscal year is Feb. 1 to Jan 31.

For more information about JCPenney Afterschool, visit a JCPenney store and ask for the afterschool coach or store manager for assistance. To find the nearest JCPenney store, visit the company’s Web site, click on the words “store locator” at the bottom of the screen, and follow the prompts.
