Neighborhood Networks Discussions Instructions

Once you enter Online Networking, a screen will appear itemizing the major categories of the discussion. To view all the discussions under a category, click the link. You can also review the information using four "View" options that allow users to look at the information in different ways.

The three "views" are listed on the left side of the screen. You can view items in the forum as follows:

  • By Author

  • By Date

  • By Category

  • The forum also allows you to View and Respond to Entries and Create New Discussions.

    By Author

If you click on By Author, you will view a list of all Authors. The Authors are listed in alphabetical order by the first letter of the first name used. For example, Debby Volk will appear before Toni Gallo.

If you click on the blue triangle next to a name, a list of all of the entries written by that person will appear. If you click on the blue triangle again, the list will disappear.

    By Date

If you double click on By Date, you will view a list of dates in chronological order with the most recent date at the top of the page. These are dates on which entries were made. If you click on a blue triangle next to a date, a list of all discussions and replies made on that date will appear. The ID of the person who made the coment appears to the left and the subject appears on the right. If you click on the blue triangle again, the list will disappear.

    By Category

If you double click on By Category, you will view a listing of categories (in green). If you click on the blue triangle next to a category, you will see a list of all of the entries made under that category. If you click on the blue triangle next to one of these entries, you will see a list of all of the responses made to that entry. If you click on the blue triangle again, the list will disappear.

    Creating New Discussion/New Category

If you want to start a discussion on a new issue or create a new category. To do this, simply click on the Create Discussion icon at the top of the page. A Discussion screen will appear.

    Complete the following information:

      -   Next to Subject, enter the subject matter about which you are writing.
      -   If you want to see if the category you want to add already exists, scroll through the box next to Categories.
      -   If your category already exists, highlight it.
      -   If your category doesn’t already exist, enter the name of the category under Enter new category.
      -   If you want to attach a file, follow the directions under Viewing and Responding to Entries above.
      -   If, after having added a category, you decide that you don’t want to add it, click on the Previous at the bottom of the page.
      -   If you decide that you do want to keep the new category, click on the Save at the bottom of the page.
      -   Enter your issue or comment in the box under Contents.

    Viewing and Responding to Entries

If you want to read one of the entries, click on the entry you want to see. The response or discussion document will appear. If you want to add a response to what is written, click on the New Response icon at the bottom of the page.

    Complete the following information:

        -   Next to Subject, enter the subject matter about which you are writing.
        -   Next to Attach a file, you may do just that if you wish. You may do this by clicking on the browse button. Select the folders and file you want, double-click on the file icon, and the file will be attached to your response.
        -   Type your response, comment, or question under Contents.
        -   When you are finished and you want to send your response, click on the Save at the bottom of the page.
        -   If you don’t want to send your response, click on the Previous at the bottom of the page. Doing this will bring you back to the original item to which you were adding your response.

If you create a new category, however, be sure the category does not already exist. For instance, if there is a category called Center Sustainability, don’t create a new category called Funding Sources. Once the forum contains numerous entries, it will be difficult for participants to find what they’re looking for if there are overlapping categories.

If you have any questions about how to use the Online Networking, e-mail us at mail@neighborhoodnetworks.org.
